Madonna Diaz-Refugia

Madonna Diaz-Refugia got her start writing jokes for drag queens in Philly after taking playwriting classes taught by Broadway playwright Albert Innaurato. She now lives in Los Angeles where they write about mental illness and being queer in the Filipinx-American community. She was part of the inaugural class of the Mentorship Matters Fellowship where she was paired with showrunner Kelly Galuska as her mentor. Born in Saipan and eventually landing in the suburb of White Marsh, MD where she grew up, Madonna writes about her lovably chaotic family and her struggles with bipolar disorder without forgetting to sprinkle jokes in between the drama. As a self-proclaimed “recovered comedian,” Madonna studied at the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York and has been featured on Reductress and WFMU.
