The Insider: Finding the Right Script with Christopher Lockhart

Christopher Lockhart has been a judge for our annual spring WGFestival pitch competition, where he gives us a glimpse into why a story or a pitch works, or why it doesn’t.

Lockhart is the Story Editor at WME, where he helps to find projects for celebrated talent such as Denzel Washington. On this special event, he will discuss in depth what makes a script the “right” script that everyone in town wants to read, star in, and produce.

Lockhart shares what he has seen in his almost 30 years in the industry, what he looks for in projects, and what story knowledge he has gained by reading over 50,000 screenplays.

Ava DuVernay’s passion for her craft knows no bounds. As a writer, director, and producer of features (A WRINKLE IN TIME, SELMA, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE), award-winning documentaries (13TH, THIS IS THE LIFE) and critically acclaimed television (QUEEN SUGAR), DuVernay has become a creative force that has deftly carved her own path across platforms, genres, and industries. 

On this special evening, the filmmaker and social justice advocate discusses her process for writing, developing, and directing her film and TV projects, how she approaches each season of hit OWN series QUEEN SUGAR, and what she has planned for ARRAY, her film collective that distributes the work of people of color and women directors.  

Before seeing Ava, get caught up on QUEEN SUGAR, which returns with a two-night premiere on Tuesday, October 3rd and Wednesday, October 4th. QUEEN SUGAR airs on OWN each Wednesday at 10pm.

The Art of War: Crafting Stories About Combat and Military Life

In honor of Veteran’s Day, we are exploring the craft of writing about war and military life. From the early days of cinema to this season’s current slate of television shows, the lives of soldiers and the complex worlds they inhabit remain a fascinating and endless source of stories for the screen. 

On this special event, our panel of writers, some of whom are military veterans themselves, share their military experience, their process for chronicling tales of combat, how they’ve researched military life, how they’ve shaped characters’ points of view, and how they approach the themes they’ve chosen to tackle.
