Inside the Writers Room with Insecure

Building on the success of her web series THE MISADVENTURES OF AWKWARD BLACK GIRL, Issa Rae brings her fresh and funny voice to HBO as the co-creator (with past WGF board member Larry Wilmore) and star of the cable network’s new hit comedy series, INSECURE.

The show follows the lives of 29-year-old Issa (played by Rae) and her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji) as they navigate through every day, uncomfortable career and relationship experiences in Los Angeles.

On this special evening, Rae, showrunner Prentice Penny (BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, HAPPY ENDINGS) and the writers room discuss their process of developing the show’s comedic voice, how they approach the direction of season one, and how they turn mundane life moments into hilarious and sharp commentary on race, gender and culture. Moderated by Yvonne Villarrealof the Los Angeles Times.
