  • Think about the anticipation that is created by having another character imply: prepare yourself with regard to another character. Marge is telling Andrew to prepare himself, but also she’s telling us as the readers. Remember: anticipation keeps us engaged.

  • Also note that we see the bright, loud colors and shapes before we ever meet Gladys the person.

  • Finally, the neon jumper, cracked make-up and gaudy jewelry really help to paint a picture.
